Amelia Mary Earhart

Her early years
Amelia was born in Kansas U.S.A. in 1897. Her parents didn’t have a lot of money, but her grandparents were wealthy, so she was sent to the best schools. When Amelia was 20 years old, she chose to study to become a nurse and worked as a nurse during World War I. At the age of 23, she went to visit an air show and went in a plane for the first time it was an unforgettable experience,  from that moment she knew that she wanted to be a pilot.
What she did
In the 1920’s flying was considered to be dangerous and therefore not an ideal activity for women. But even so, Amelia decided to have flying lessons. The following year, she broke her first record by flying at an altitude of 14,000 feet. In 1932 she became  the first woman to cross the Atlantic non stop, and was awarded The United State Distinguished Flying Cross. After this adventure she became famous and travelled all over the world to speak about her experience. At the age of 34 she got married but never had any children. In 1935 at the age of 38, she became the first person to fly across the Pacific Ocean from Honolulu Hawaii to Oakland California.

The last flight
When Amelia was nearly forty years old, she decided she wanted to set a new Record by being the first woman to fly around the world. She started her trip from Miami on 1 June 1937, a month later on the second of July she had nearly completed the 29,000 mile flight, but her plane disappeared near Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean. Since the time of her disapperance, there have been many expeditions to the area to find the wreckage of the plane. But the plane has never been found and remains a mystery to this day.  She is ranked 9th in the list of the 51 heroes of aviation.
